Chapter Eighteen

Ryle pulled into the Stryder Hotel that evening thirty minutes before the meeting with Kerra seated beside her. She cut the engine and glanced around the parking lot in search of Bali.

“She’s probably in bat form,” Kerra murmured. “I’ll dial her number.”

She pulled her own phone from her pants pocket. There were no messages, but she hadn’t expected to find any unless they were from Kensal or Bali. She toyed with the idea of sending Zhara a message, but decided against it.

That she even thought about it was uncharted territory for her. She’d seen how love could rip a woman’s heart out and turn her inside out. Her mother had killed herself over a man leaving Ryle to the mercy of her father. She’d adored him once upon a time, but the love had slowly turned to hate as she watched her father’s cheating destroy her mother one night at a time.

Her mother’s mate had died before Ryle was born, but her mother had found solace in Ryle’s father. He was a vampire, the undead who walked the night feeding off humans. Like all the undead vampires, he had a second form. Some took the form of a bat, while others, the wolf.

Her father’s second form was a wolf. His genetics made Ryle different; a wolf-bat, they called her, because she had the speed, claws, and agility of the wolf in her animal form. Her eyes glowed in the dark and her senses were wolf-sharp. And like the wolf, she was a telepath in her animal form. Bats had that ability too, giving her the ability to communicate over even longer distances.

“They’ll be here in a few minutes,” Kerra said. “Bali wants us to go ahead and start checking things out.”

Ryle climbed out and slid her phone back into her pocket before combing her fingers through her hair.

Her father’s betrayal had destroyed her faith in love even before it began, despite witnessing it in others of her family who were happily mated or partnered.

On the other hand, she saw it and knew it for what it was in Kensal’s relationship with Fallina and even Kerra’s with Azure, and it made her ache for that which she feared.

“Did lunch help smooth things with Zhara?”

“No.” Ryle opened the back door of her truck. Leaning inside, she pulled out the leather sheath containing the labrys from beneath the seat. She undid the buckle of her belt to slip the sheath onto it.

“An axe?” Kerra asked as Ryle adjusted the sheath, positioning it at her hip. “You must be really pissed at having to miss an evening with Zhara. She could be worth the trouble.”

Ryle shot her look and closed the door, then glanced around, vision sharpening even more. “Don’t know what you’re talking about.” Zhara was something intriguing, and she’d thrown Ryle off balance this afternoon and this evening after the meeting with her managers.

She’d been so in control to the point of being cool.

“Azure said Zhara bought some sexy lingerie the other day from the marketplace,” Kerra murmured.
